The high quality conservation skills brought to this demanding project by Thomas Johnstone have been greatly appreciated by staff and the public users of the new facility.
The project’s success and appreciation by the many users of the building is due to the particular attention paid to retaining and enhancing the listed building’s features and the first class quality of the finishing works.
This project involved the total refurbishment of an existing listed building within Edinburgh's historic Old Town to form new office facilities for the registration of births, deaths & marriages and the formation of rooms suitable for staging wedding ceremonies together with associated meeting rooms and conference facilities. In addition to the difficulties associated with working in a historic building the project team also had to accommodate restrictions to site access and loading and unloading constraints due to the building's location at the corner of George IV Bridge and the historic Royal Mile. Despite these challenges the team delivered a facility which will serve the city well for generations to come.
A Green Apple was awarded by the Green Organisation for the refurbishment of the Lothian Chambers, which recognises and rewards environmental endeavour in the built environment.
