2008 - A Brief Review

Despite the economic challenges occasioned by the credit crunch and the global financial crisis, we are delighted to advise that Thomas Johnstone Ltd continues to make progress on all fronts towards our goal of being:- “A great company to work for, and a great company to work with”

We are delighted to confirm that during 2008 sales revenues again increased by some 20% to just under £44 million. This ongoing success was achieved by listening to, understanding and more importantly responding to customer needs.  This, as a consequence, has reinforced customers’ confidence in our ability to add value to their projects.
We note below just a few of the highlights of another impressive year, during which we continued to build on our strong mutually beneficial relationships.

Expansion of our in-house capabilities
We introduced our own decorating division at the beginning of 2008. The guys have been working well at aligning with our other internal divisions as well as creating relationships with external clients such as Abbey and British Transport Police.

New Appointments Peter Queen was appointed as our Sales and Marketing Manager in August, and will be heavily involved in developing the relationships with our clients and realising opportunities in the marketplace. Peter has worked in the industry for a number of years, and we are already benefiting from his undoubted expertise.

Scotland, a Changing Nation
We recently carried out works at the National Museum of Scotland, in the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town.  Our 12-week project included the manufacture and installation of interactive displays, which required close collaboration with designers and museum staff to ensure all exhibits were transported and arranged systematically on site.  The exhibition “Scotland, A Changing Nation” opened in July 2008 and showcases the story of Scotland its land, its people and culture.

The Skyhub is taking off at Glasgow Airport
Through successful projects with BAA in the past at both Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports, we were thrilled to get involved in the biggest investment at Glasgow Airport since the 1990s. Works included formation of the shell layouts and the internal fit out to deliver a World Class search and retail facility within the Airport. This £2.7m project was handed over in November to a delighted client who was keen for our team to follow on with the third phase. Phase 3 will involve fit out to the ex domestic search area, International Departure Lounge (IDL) Ramp and existing IDL area, and should be finished in time for your summer holidays this year.

Our very first crane in Edinburgh, for Hotel du Vin
This 56 week project started at the beginning of 2008, and it was an exciting time for us, as it became the location of our very first tower crane. This site has been transformed into a stunning boutique hotel boasting 47 bedrooms and suites, as well as its own bistro and bar. Hotel du Vin began trading in December with phased handovers and completion at the end of January.

Further Education
The Education sector worked hard in 2008 on renovations and refurbishments and we are pleased to have been involved with a number of projects in campuses across Scotland:

  • University of West of Scotland; Barbour, Elles and Brough Buildings
  • Glasgow College of Commerce; Charles Oakley Building
  • James Watt College; Finnart Street Campus
  • Glasgow University; Graham Kerr and Davidson Buildings
  • Glasgow School of Art
  • Edinburgh University; Visitor Centre

2009 - A Positive Outlook?

Industry commentators and financial experts are struggling to make accurate predictions of what will happen to the economy, (certainly for the foreseeable future). We are however pleased to confirm a current order book with already 70% of this year’s budgeted sales.  We believe that in these uncertain times a company that will act with integrity and deliver a quality of product and a level of service which is unrivalled in the market place will continue to prosper.
We therefore look forward to working with all our existing and new customers in 2009, and guarantee we will make a positive contribution to your business.
